NCADD Conference of Affiliates
Each year, NCADD Affiliates and others convene at the NCADD Conference of Affiliates for three days of training, networking and socializing. For the past several years, the Conference is held in the Washington, DC area every other year and in an Affiliate city in alternating years.
In 2010, the Conference was held in Phoenix, AZ to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of our Affiliate, NCADD Phoenix. Among the nationally-known speakers were Virginia Mackay-Smith of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), who provided an update of Federal programs. Michael Shafer, PhD, CEO of Arizona State University ATTC, who presented on the "Intersect Between Treatment and Child Protection/Child Welfare," Michael Flaherty, PhD, Executive Director of the Institute for Research, Education and Training in Addiction, who presented on "Building a Unified System of Recovery in Health Reform: Implications and Opportunities for NCADD Affiliates," and Mel Pohl, MD, Vice President of Medical Affairs and Medical Director, Las Vegas Recovery Center, spoke on "Pain and Addiction: A Challenging Co-Occurring Disorder." Some of the social aspects of the Conference included a Southwest style dinner at the home of former Phoenix Board Member Leslie Warner and her husband, John, to celebrate NCADD-Phoenix's Anniversary, a screening of "Lost in Woonsocket," a heart-wrenching documentary film about two alcohol and drug addicted men living together in the woods, estranged from their families and in desperate need of help; an Awards Luncheon, sponsored by Mutual of America, one of NCADD's corporate partners in the Affiliate Benefit Provider Program (ABPP), and another luncheon sponsored in part by the Professional Association of Council Executives (PACE).
Given the program creativity and mentor support available through the Affiliates, networking opportunities were available through two Round Robin sessions. The Round Robins offer a unique opportunity for Affiliates to learn about programs offered by other Affiliates and to request program or management assistance from their peers.
Save The Date: The 2011 NCADD Conference of Affiliates will be held September 7-10, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, VA and its theme is "Using New Tools: the Necessity and the Opportunity." As part of the 2011 Conference of Affiliates, on September 8th, NCADD will be hosting the kickoff luncheon for the National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, attended by the Recovery Month Planning Partners.
