Drugs for Anxiety, Depression or Insomnia May Increase Risk of Car Accidents

7362285Drugs for anxiety, depression and insomnia could impair driving ability, and may increase the risk of having a car accident, a new study suggests.

Taiwanese researchers compared 5,200 people involved in major auto accidents, with more than 31,000 people with no record of serious accidents. They found people who were involved in car accidents were more likely to have been taking medications, known as psychotropic drugs, for these conditions, HealthDay reports.

More States Institute “Social Host” Laws to Cut Down on Underage Drinking

Young-girl-with-Beer-BottleA growing number of states are instituting "social host" laws, which are designed to cut down on underage drinking, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The laws impose criminal or civil penalties on hosts who permit underage drinking on their property. As of January, 28 states had adopted such laws, up from 18 in 2005. Hosts can be charged regardless of who supplies the alcohol, or whether anyone is hurt, the article notes.

Several states, including California, have passed laws that impose penalties if someone is harmed by underage drinking. In addition, many counties and cities are passing their own social hosting measures.

NCADD To Present Marty Mann Founder’s Award To Betty Currier

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) has named Elizabeth R. Currier as the Marty Mann Founder's Award recipient for 2012. The award will be presented during the NCADD 2012 Conference of Affiliates to be held October 24-26 in New Orleans, LA.

Elizabeth Currier (Betty) enjoys 36 years of sustained recovery from addiction. It was her own struggle with alcohol that led her to become a co-founder of the LEAF Council on Alcoholism and Addictions in 1982 and to affiliate that agency with NCADD. LEAF, Inc. serves as the local agency that provides education, information and referrals on the disease of addiction and is now in its 30th year of operations.

During her tenure as Executive Director of LEAF, Ms. Currier received a New York Woman of Distinction Award from State Senator James Seward, as well as many other honors and awards for her work in the field of addiction. In the 1990's, Betty served for six years as President of the Council on Addiction of New York State (CANYS), New York's State Affiliate of NCADD.

NCADD to Present Silver Key Award to Ed Tasch

TaschEdward F. Tasch, NCADA Executive Director, is on the right in the photo aboveThe National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) has named Edward F. Tasch as the Silver Key Award recipient for 2012.

The award will be presented during the NCADD 2012 Conference of Affiliates to be held October 24-26 in New Orleans, LA.

Ed Tasch is Executive Director of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse—St. Louis Area, a post he has held since 1979, making him one of the longest serving Executive Directors among NCADD Affiliates.

2012 EAPA Ross Von Weigand Award To Be Presented To FAA and NATCA EAP

2012confwebLOGONCADD is pleased to announce that the 2012 EAPA Ross Von Weigand Award will be presented this year to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) EAP. The award will presented at annual EAPA conference scheduled for October 17-20, 2012 in Baltimore, MD.

NCADD is the birthplace of Employee Assistance Programs (originally known as Occupational Alcoholism Programs) and very few people played a more critical role on behalf of NCADD in helping to make EAP a reality than Ross Von Weigand, as a successor to Lewis Presnall at NCADD. Over the years, millions of lives and careers have been saved as a result!
