Sharp Increase in Rx Poisonings Among Teens Reported

RxPoisoning deaths among teenagers rose 91 percent between 2000 and 2009, primarily due to prescription drug abuse, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Prescription drug abuse appears to be replacing marijuana as a "gateway drug" that leads to the abuse of harder drugs, said Dr. Julie Gilchrist of the CDC's Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention.

Adolescents Benefit From Attending 12-Step Meetings

TeensTeens undergoing treatment for alcohol or drug abuse can benefit from the 12-step program used by groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), researchers say.

While these programs are widely available, little research has looked at how effective they are for teens.

People who engage in hazardous and harmful drinking are more likely to reduce their consumption of alcohol for at least one year if they receive just seven minutes of counseling from an emergency room physician, a new study finds. Physician counseling can also reduce drinking and driving.
