Stacia Murphy Named NCADD President

Stacia Murphy, who has worked in the field of alcoholism and other drug addictions for nearly 25 years as an educator and administrator, has been appointed president of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) effective September 7, 1999. Since 1990, Ms. Murphy has served as the executive director of NCADD's New York City affiliate. She is the first affiliate executive director ever to lead the national organization. "Ms. Murphy rose to the top of a large pool of superb candidates through an extensive selection process," observed board chair Max A. Schneider, MD in making the announcement. "She clearly is driven to help others and her previous involvement with NCADD will make it much easier for her to assume responsibility for the large number of exciting projects on our national agenda." "I am honored to have been chosen for this important position at such a significant turning point in our field," declared Murphy. "Throughout my own recovery from alcoholism, NCADD founder Marty Mann has been a great source of inspiration. In partnership with NCADD's volunteer board of directors, affiliates and other prominent organizations, I plan to carry her mission to reduce the stigma surrounding alcoholism and other drug addictions into the new millennium." At the Alcoholism Council of New York, NCADD's New York City Affiliate, Ms. Murphy directed a private, non-profit agency with a $1.7 million budget. In this position, she supervised the development and implementation of a wide variety of programs and projects that serve city, state, public and private organizations, correctional institutions and individuals. The Alcoholism Council, New York City's oldest resource for education and training in the field of alcohol and other drug treatment, also offers a drinking driver program, an aftercare program for parolees, motivational counseling, work place assistance and family intervention as well as information and prevention services. Ms. Murphy, who received her BA from Talladega College in Alabama, is skilled in management training, teaching and administration. She has particular expertise in working with youth and with the criminal justice system. Ms. Murphy oversaw the merger of the Fellowship Center of New York, which provided counseling to parolees with addiction problems, with the Alcoholism Council of New York. Her career in the alcoholism and other drug addictions field also has included positions with the Community Service Society, the New York City Mission Society and the New York State Division of Youth. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. provides education, information, help and hope in the fight against the chronic and often fatal disease of alcoholism, and other drug addictions.
