NEW STUDY BREAKS DOWN SUBSTANCE ABUSE IMPACT STATE-BY-STATE

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) is pleased to report The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA) published a new study, analyzing the impact of substance abuse by state.

CASA recently announced the release of a "groundbreaking 3-year study -- Shoveling Up: The Impact of Substance Abuse on State Budgets" (1/29/01). It is the first time a state-by-state breakdown of the impact of substance abuse has been published.

"Substance abuse and addiction is the elephant in the living room of state government, creating havoc with service systems, causing illness, injury and death and consuming increasing amounts of state resources," says Joseph Califano, Jr., CASA president. “This report reveals for the first time that the biggest bang for the buck in taming the costs of social programs will come to those states that curb substance abuse and addiction.”

The report is available at no cost on the CASA website.
