CONGRESSIONAL UPDATE

HOUSE APPROPRIATORS HEAR FROM THE FIELD !!
SENATE APPROPRIATIONS SUBCOMMITTEE WILL VOTE NEXT (6/30/98)

House Appropriators Hear from the Field!

The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education generously funded alcohol and other drug treatment, prevention and education programs for Fiscal Year 1999 despite severe spending limits. Clearly, our efforts to contact members of Congress were successful at this level! Congratulations!

Now, the full House Appropriations must take up the bill. It is scheduled to do so on Tuesday, July 14.

Senate Appropriations Subcommittee to Vote Next

The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee is scheduled to consider its FY 1999 bill as early as Tuesday, July 7. This subcommittee also has very severe spending limits that will make providing large increases difficult.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

KEEP THOSE CALLS AND LETTERS COMING!

Now is the time for everyone to tell the Senate to increase funding for alcohol and other drug treatment, prevention and education programs. The Capitol Hill Switchboard number is 202/224-3121; just ask for your senators' offices. Members of the Senators can be reached via e-mail: The U. S. Senate.

Urge your senators to SUPPORT AN INCREASE IN FUNDING. Ask your senator to support the field's requested levels:

Substance Abuse Block Grant $1.585 Billion
Center for Substance Abuse Treatment $180 million
Center for Substance Abuse Prevention $170 million
CSAP's High Risk Youth Program $10 million
Safe and Drug Free Schools $606 million
