FUNDING UPDATE
21st CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTERS GRANTS
FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION (7/15/98)
The U.S. Department of Education has announced grantees of
awards for 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The
grants, which went to 315 local school districts across the
country, are for planning, implementing or expanding after-
school projects -- including drug and violence prevention
counseling. The federal government has appropriated $40
million for FY 1998, and the C.S. Mott Foundation has pledged
to provide $55 million over the next five years for training,
technical assistance and other support for grantees.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
To find out if a school district near your agency has
received a grant obtain a list of grantees via the internet by
accessing the Department's website at:
http://www.ed.gov/offices/OERI/21stCCLC/slate98.html.
Grantees can sub-contract with other agencies to carry out,
and perhaps expand, their program, so Affiliates are encouraged to contact the grantees to see if they can participate.
