CONGRESSIONAL UPDATE
SAFE AND DRUG FREE SCHOOLS APPROPRIATIONS (9/23/98)
The Senate is scheduled to vote on appropriations level for the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities (SDFSC) program within the next few weeks this week.
BACKGROUND
The House of Representatives voted to fund the SDFSC program for Fiscal Year 1999, which begins October 1, at $556 million. The bill approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee (S. 2440), which is scheduled to be voted on by the full Senate this week, takes $151 million from SDFSC to create a new national school anti-violence initiative.
This will result in severe funding cuts to the drug prevention
field.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Contact your senators as soon as possible, by either calling the Capitol Hill Switchboard * (202/224-3121), or sending them an e-mail (U.S. Senate).
Tell your senators:
* You oppose any cuts to the Safe and Drug Free
Schools and Communities program. This program
should be funded at $555 million for FY 1999.
* Give an example of how the money is being used
in your area.
***ASK FRIENDS, CO-WORKERS AND FAMILY MEMBERS TO CALL AS WELL***
*If you have difficulty getting through on the switchboard, which has experienced some overload recently, go to the U.S. Senate website for direct numbers.
