CONGRESSIONAL UPDATE
REQUEST FOR INCREASED PREVENTION AND TREATMENT (7/11/00)
Alcohol and drug prevention and treatment services have been
underfunded for several years. President Clinton has an opportunity, in his negoations with congressional leaders on fiscal year 2001 spending, to work to increase funding these areas.
BACKGROUND
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) has drafted a letter to President Clinton asking for his leadership in getting more funding for alcohol and drug prevention and treatment services for fiscal year 2001. He is seeking co-signers for his letter from all members of the House of Representatives.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Contact your representative and urge him/her to sign on to the Rep. Cummnigs' letter. Tell your representative:
Tell them:
- Prevention funding for the Center for Substance Abuse
Prevention (CSAP) has decreased over the past few years;
- Treatment services are available to only about half the
people who need them;
- Although over $1 billion was approved for interdiction in Colombia, no additional domestic prevention and treatment
funding was approved.
The Capitol switchboard number is 202/224-3121.
Rep. Cummings needs the co-signers by July 14, 2000.
