PART ONE:

   HOW-TO ADVOCACY PRIMER: Steps to Conducting an Advocacy Needs Assessment

    STEP ONE:  Conduct a needs assessment of your key constituencies.

      
      Consider the following:
    1.  Is there a treatment gap in your community?

    2.  Is your organization in need of additional state and/or federal funding?


    STEP TWO:  Assess the impact of parity legislation on your organization/community.

     
      Consider the following:
    1.  Will the organization/community be a winner or loser if a pending initiative is successful?

    2.  How would the intiatives affect your organization's programs and services?


    STEP THREE:  If you are working on stigma reduction, consider creating handouts on the following:

      
    1.  The components of addiction and why it is considered a disease

    2.  The number of people estimated to be chemically dependent

    3.  The cost of untreated addiction to your commuinity and the families within your community


    STEP FOUR:  Consider the following talking points when discussing your issues

      
    1.  Describe the recovering community in terms of the size of its voting block

    2.  Is your organization in need of additional state and/or federal funding?
