Mission: The mission of Burke Recovery is "to work collaboratively with community partners to provide education/prevention, treatment and recovery support services to all citizens of Burke County regardless of their ability to pay." The council is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of volunteers concerned about Burke County. We are a private, non-profit organization. The Council believes addiction to alcohol and or other substances is a chronic disease. We focus our efforts on education, prevention, treatment and recovery support services. Burke Recovery promotes public understanding and awareness that the alcoholic or chemically addicted person can be helped. We are committed to the alleviation of the suffering and to the improvement of the lives of all persons affected by substance abuse and/or dependency. Mission: To increase awareness about the devastating effects of alcoholism and drug dependency on the individual, the family and the community. NCADD provides the opportunity for recovery through information, education and support. About: NCADD regards alcoholism and other drug addictions as treatable diseases; offers prevention programs for schools, organizations and communities; answers questions from the public, legislative bodies, and the media; and distributes a variety of publications. NCADD also offers information and referral services to children, teenagers, and adults seeking help with alcoholism, other drug dependencies and related problems. A majority of this information is available free of charge. Up-to-date information on both inpatient and outpatient treatment resources is provided on the community, state and national level. Mission: To reduce human suffering and the economic cost of alcoholism and other drug addiction. We advocate for prevention, early interventions and treatment that includes a system of care. History: Committed to Service - ADCNC was initially incorporated in 1955 as the United Medical Research Foundation of North Carolina. It was founded to support outreach into under-recognized health issues in our communities. As alcoholism and addiction became an urgent concern, the agency refined its focus and changed its name to United Health Services for Alcohol and Drug Abuse (UHS). Expanding its focus statewide, the agency began working on issues of access. In 1977, Dr. Jonnie H. McLeod, the renowned pediatrician and addiction advocate, presented UHS with an outstanding service award from the North Carolina Drug Commission.
