SPOTLIGHT: South Bend, IN Affiliate’s “Celebrating Families! Program

FamiliesCelebrating Families!™ is an evidence based cognitive behavioral skills-building course for families in early recovery from substance dependence.

It focuses on the entire family with the hopes of strengthening recovery in individuals and breaking the cycle of addiction in families. The Alcohol & Addictions Resource Center, NCADD's South Bend Affiliate, is able to offer the class completely free to participants through a grant it received from the Division of Mental Health and Addiction, Indiana Family and Social Service Administration.

The program objectives are to: Break the cycle of addiction in families; Decrease participants'' use of alcohol and other drugs by increasing knowledge and the use of healthy living skills; and, Increase the rate of family reunification and family cohesiveness.

The 16-week program covers the following topics:

  1. Orientation and Getting Started
  2. Healthy Living
  3. Nutrition
  4. Communication
  5. Feelings and Defenses
  6. Anger Management
  7. Facts About Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs
  8. Chemical Dependency is a Disease
  9. Chemical Dependency Affects the Whole Family
  10. Goal Setting
  11. Masking Healthy Choices
  12. Healthy Boundaries
  13. Healthy Friendships and Relationships
  14. How We Learn
  15. Our Uniqueness
  16. Celebration!

Each of the above weekly sessions includes a 30-minute dinner that builds-up family bonds, a 90 minute Learning Activity and a 30 minute Family Time Activity. The Learning Time is divided into following groups for age-specific programs:

  • Ages 4-7: Play time in the Child Care Room
  • Ages 7-11: Children's Program Activities
  • Ages 12-17: Youth Program Activities
  • Adults (ages 18 and older): Parent/Family Program Activities

The Family Time Activity is designed to connect with the family and use some of the new skills learned.

The Celebrating Families! program was created in 2003 at the request of a California judge in the Juvenile Dependency Court, and in 2007, the program was acquired by the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) to promote and disseminate across the country. In August 2008, Celebrating Families! was listed on the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Registry of Effective Programs and Practices (NREPP).

In 2014, the Alcohol & Addictions Resource Center received a grant from the Division of Mental Health and Addiction, Indiana Family and Social Service Administration, and is able to offer Celebrating Families! free of charge in the community.

Although free to program participants pre-registration is required. Participant meets weekly from 5:30-8:00 pm. A family meal is served at each session, all course materials are provided, and attendance incentives are offered. Travel assistance may also be available.

Alcohol & Addictions Resource Center has received very positive feedback from participants who went through the first cohort, and is experiencing faithful attendance in the second cohort. Registrations for the third cohort, which will begin August 18, are being accepted.
