SPOTLIGHT: Phoenix, AZ Affiliate’s Women's Outpatient Program
“Supporting women in building a healthy life for themselves and their children” is a motto of NCADD Phoenix and to do that, the Affiliate provides a variety of programs aimed at helping women. The Affiliate’s programs focus on providing the tools and resources needed to help women become financially self-sufficient and to believe in their potential to remain drug and alcohol free and live a quality life. Women who abuse alcohol and other drugs have unique issues. NCADD Phoenix offers an Outpatient Program that recognizes that recovery for women requires development of life skills, resolution of life issues, goals, values, self-image, independence and empowerment. The program was developed on a time frame of at least 1 year. The National Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence—Orange County in Lake Forest, CA has, among its major goals, to provide information, education, prevention, and referral in eliminating alcohol, tobacco and other drug-related problems in its community. Studies have shown that teens who consistently learn about the risks of alcohol, marijuana and drugs from their parents are 50% less likely to use those substances. To help carry out this goal, the Council has developed a “Parent Toolkit” which is a resource guide to help raise kids free of alcohol/other drug use. SPOTLIGHT: Baton Rouge, LA Affiliate’s Treatment Programs
O’Brien House, NCADD’s Baton Rouge, LA Affiliate, offers an array of programs, including both inpatient and outpatient treatment. Residential Program The inpatient program is a three-month comprehensive, multi-phase residential program based on the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s (ASAM) criteria. This program utilizes cognitive-behavioral, rational emotive and motivational enhancement therapies and includes: A structured environment with individual and group counseling by qualified professionals; Housing facilities for men and women; Nutritionally balanced meals; Involvement in Alcoholic’s Anonymous and other 12 Step Programs; Life Skills Program which includes career counseling, job readiness training and job placement assistance. The program consists of three phases. Phase One is an average of two to three weeks in which clients may not leave the premises unless they are accompanied by a staff member except with prior approval and special permission from the treatment director. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence—Greater Detroit Area (NCADD-GDA) is known for serving many of Metro Detroit’s most talented youth. NCADD-GDA’s Youth Prevention programs target under-served, economically disadvantaged youth ages 10-21. The programs’ mission is to provide a safe environment where youth receive support and resources needed to be drug-free, attain academic success, and develop social responsibility. These services are delivered by two unique programs: S.T.E.P.S. (Strong Teens Excelling In Prevention Services) and SAFETY (Successful Alliance For Educating Talented Youth). SPOTLIGHT: Tarrytown, NY Affiliate’s Adolescent Impaired Driving Prevention Program
Student Assistance Services Corp, an NCADD Affiliate located in Tarrytown NY, and servicing all of Westchester County, implements the ROADD (Reduce Our Adolescent Drinking/Drugging and Driving) Program. ROADD is an educational program aimed at preventing alcohol and other drug impaired driving among high school students. It is funded by the Westchester County Office of Drug Prevention and STOP-DWI, which in turn receives monies from the fines paid by convicted drunk drivers. The ROADD Program is free to participating public, private, and parochial schools in Westchester County. It is provided for two years at a school and then is offered to other schools on a rotating basis. Students receive six class sessions conducted by a ROADD Health Educator. The classes consist primarily of sophomores and juniors, and are usually delivered through the school's health class, or another appropriate subject. The Erie County Council for the Prevention of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (ECCPASA) offers “Tomorrows’ Leaders Camp” (TLC), a fun, yet educational camp that provides interactive, hands-on experiences that will teach and enhance the leadership qualities of its young participants. TLC is an extension of community and school-based prevention programming and services that are provided to youth throughout Erie County. Summer camp provides an opportunity to continue to teach prosocial skills throughout the summer. Current research shows that substance abuse prevention is more effective when it is paired with education, social skills, decision making skills and refusal skills. Mornings at the main office of the Alcohol/Drug Council of North Carolina (ADCNC), you will find Keith Kimbro and Danny O’Brian at their desks, telephone headsets fixed and listening intently to the person who has called for their assistance. “Sometimes we have to just teach family members you can’t love away this disease. We spend lot of time sharing facts about substance use disorders that the public doesn’t understand,” states Kimbro. Danny adds, “Everyday this job allows me to give back what was given to me! SPOTLIGHT: Santa Barbara’s Drug Court Programs
The Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, NCADD’s Santa Barbara Affiliate, offers drug court programs as alternatives to incarceration. One of these programs, the Clean and Sober Court , was developed in conjunction with the Santa Barbara Police Department to provide nonviolent misdemeanor or felony offenders who plead guilty to their crime a chance to receive alcohol and drug treatment rather than face incarceration. The program offers a non-adversarial courtroom atmosphere where a single judge and a dedicated team of court officers and staff work together to break the cycle of drug abuse and criminal behavior. After an initial "dryout" in jail, clients are referred to an outpatient or residential treatment program, and/or a sober living facility. Adult offenders with felonies or misdemeanors participate in a minimum of six months of treatment.
